INAUGURAL HELLENIC ARTS GALA EVENT 2022
Every year, our Senior School students represent our College at the Greek Orthodox Schools Sports Event. The 7 Greek Orthodox schools from around Australia participate in a range of sport and art (singing, dancing, drama) events over a number of days. Due to COVID restrictions and boarder closures this event was cancelled over the past 2 years. Earlier this year St John’s College and Oakleigh Grammar met for a Sports event and this week students participated in a range of Art and Music workshops at St John’s College.
The Gala commenced with a Doxology, presided over by His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Kerasounta and Reverend Fathers. Following the workshops students shared a meal and enjoyed dancing. It was lovely to see great team work and new friendships being formed throughout the day.
It was lovely to hear speeches from both Principals and our School Captains. Quoting SJC Captains “Today isn’t just a celebration of Greek culture, but a celebration of the ideas and traditions derived from Hellenism which unites all people. It is the magic of Hellenism that inspired the first migrants to keep the dream alive, and to establish our schools that are now embedded into the Australian society.”
“No matter if your Greek or not, the idea of Hellenism can be and is celebrated by everyone. Hellenism is rich with culture and is comprised of exquisite art, music, theatre and dance. Let’s celebrate. After all, the philosopher Socrates said it best: Anybody can be a Hellene, by his heart, his mind, his spirit.”
